NEIGHBORHOOD

Carroll Gardens is a residential neighborhood located in western Brooklyn.

It is bounded by the I-278 to the south and west, Cobble and Boerum Hills to the north, and the Gowanus Canal to the east. While the area has seen a recent uptick in development, it is most known for the collection of picturesque row houses that line each of its “place” streets. The massive front gardens of these homes are mandated by law, and they are the source for the second half of the neighborhood’s name.

The first half of its name comes from Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a regimental commander that fought in the Battle of Brooklyn during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the 19th Century and most of the 20th, the neighborhood was considered a part of South Brooklyn and served as an enclave for Irish and Italian-Americans that worked the docks in Red Hook or at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. In the 1960s, when the navy yard closed down and the shipping industry moved on, Carroll Gardens gained recognition as a distinct community. Since then it has seen a continuous influx of young families and professionals, and this balance of life-long residents and generational renewal is what marks the area today.

While a number of chic cafes and small boutiques are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, most of the restaurants, shops, and grocery stores can be found along Court and Smith Streets. Many of the stores retain their Italian roots, while others carry the trendy vibe of modern Brooklyn. Carroll Park, originally a private community garden, has anchored the neighborhood since the 1840s, and First Place is a must-see during Easter, Christmas, and Halloween for striking decoration displays. Public transportation options include the F and G subway lines and the B57 bus line.
